When we think of exotic and unique places to explore around the world, India often tops the list for its dramatic change of scenery. The contrasting landscapes, majestic palaces, colourful attire of the locals, cuisine bursting with flavours, and the vastness of the Thar Desert are just a few of the wonders that awaited me. Discovering India, particularly the region of Rajasthan, has been one of the most beautiful travel experiences I have ever had. While it was sometimes overwhelming and shocking, my journey was marked by openness and incredible diversity, breathtaking architectural heritage, and a fascinating history. This trip taught me to find beauty in chaos and to appreciate the richness of our differences.
I embarked on an incredible journey to India that began with two flights totalling over 16 hours from Montreal. To focus more on the experience rather than the logistics, I chose a guided group tour, which turned out to be the perfect option for my first visit to India.
As soon as I arrived in the capital, New Delhi, I was immersed in its vibrant and colourful atmosphere. I explored Old Delhi, visiting the Jama Masjid Mosque, the bustling Chandni Chowk Market, the Gandhi Memorial (Raj Ghat), and a Sikh Temple that houses Delhi's largest community kitchen, which serves 7,000 free meals daily.

The Thar Desert offered a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of the megacity of Delhi. I enjoyed watching camels roaming freely among the dunes and spending an evening in the desert under the stars, accompanied by traditional music and dancing.

Jodhpur, known as "the Blue City," was my favourite city! After visiting the magnificent Mehrangarh Fort, with its beautifully carved palaces and ramparts offering stunning views of the blue rooftops, I took a leisurely stroll through the old town. During my walk, I had the chance to meet the locals, immerse myself in the city's vibrant culture, and enjoy what my guide claimed were the best samosas in the world!

Pushkar, a sacred city and renowned Hindu pilgrimage site, surrounded me with an atmosphere rich in spirituality. I participated in a ceremony on the banks of the sacred lake, where I received a blessing and made an offering of flowers to my ancestors. This authentic experience was deeply spiritual, and I appreciated it immensely.

Jaipur, the vibrant and captivating "Pink City," features a visit to the Amber Fort, which is perched at the entrance of a gorge above a lake, as well as the famous facade of the Palace of Winds (Hawa Mahal). I am gradually getting used to the "organized" chaos that is prevalent throughout India. Rickshaws (tuk-tuks), motorcycles, cars, dogs, cows, and sometimes even camels circulate everywhere, all the time, accompanied by a constant symphony of honking horns.

And finally, there is Agra and the masterpiece that is the Taj Mahal—a symbol of love built by the emperor in memory of his wife. Made of white marble and finely carved, it is inlaid with semi-precious stones, making it truly breathtaking. This monument captivated me throughout my visit. Its beauty is indescribable, especially at sunrise, which adds to its magic.

This was my first experience in India, and what I appreciated most was having constant access to an experienced guide who shared wonderful insights about his country. I was able to visit locations that are often less accessible when travelling solo. The itineraries were optimized to maximize discovery, including visits to some less touristy spots and providing authentic traditional experiences. For my first trip to India, this reassuring support equipped me with all the tools I needed to acclimate and understand this diverse country.
